Freedom Summer

A Cultural & Community Learning Experience

Freedom Summer is a four-session journey rooted in Black history, storytelling, land, and community reflection. Inspired by the legacy of Freedom Schools, this experience invites participants to explore the past while shaping the narrative of the present.

What to Expect

Participants will:

  • Explore local history and place-based learning in Williamston

  • Engage in creative storytelling, digital skills, and cultural expression

  • Learn about food sovereignty, land, and self-sufficiency

  • Reflect on our experiences and collective vision for community

Who Should Apply

Freedom School is open to:

  • Community members of all ages curious about local history and culture

  • Youth and emerging leaders interested in creative and civic leadership

  • Artists, storytellers, and cultural workers

  • Anyone committed to learning, collaboration, and community care

Program Details

Freedom Summer sessions include:

  • Session 1: Local History & Place-Based Learning - Thursday, May 28

  • Session 2: Creative Abundance & Storytelling - Saturday, June 13

  • Session 3: Food Sovereignty & Land - Saturday, June 27

  • Session 4: Design Challenge / Reflections - Thursday, July 9
